Funding received by BioCoS for 'DNA digitisation: Olive oil authenticity and traceability from field to bottle'

27 May 2021

BioCoS, a HBio member receives funding to create a system beyond the typical blockchain by utilizing state-of-the-art PCR, ML and AI technologies, dedicated to the EVOO supply chain!

DNAblockchain aims to create a DNA traceability system from field to bottle for the olive oil industry to protect its integrity and quality. DNA profiles of both olive orchards (varietal geo-genetic map) and their produced extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) will be analysed using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques in order to deliver an automated post-processing method of DNA data analysis.

Subsequently, the output will be incorporated into a blockchain system, providing an end-to-end traceability and authenticity system for the olive oil industry. A solution that will allow users to have immediate access to the varietal composition of an EVOO as well as absence of admixtures (vegetable oils) as tested along all stages of the olive oil supply chain. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the bonds of trust between stakeholders, and communicate to consumers the value of transparency from the field to the bottle’s content.

The DNAblockchain project will enhance supply chain transparency in the olive oil industry. This is translated into: 1) increase of EVOO’s valuation through label transparency and consumer trust, 2) positive impact on society (local producers) and environment (sustainability), and 3) minimisation of risks deriving from fraudulent actions, and thus standardised control system in the olive oil industry.

The project is a collaboration between BioCoS IKE and InTTrust.
