Takis Theodorikakos: “Greece Seeks to Play a Meaningful Role in the European Semiconductor Industry”

The Ministry of Development has put the draft National Strategy for Semiconductors and Microelectronics 2026–2030 out for public consultation, with the aim of strengthening Greece’s presence in one of the most important sectors of modern technology.

Semiconductors are a critical technology for the industry of the future, Artificial Intelligence, business competitiveness and the security of critical infrastructure. The new Strategy places particular emphasis on microchip design, strengthening the links between research and innovation and manufacturing, developing skills and a highly specialised workforce, promoting the adoption of new technologies by industry, and attracting investment.

This initiative strengthens Greek industry and the country’s technological competitiveness at a critical juncture, as negotiations on the new European framework for semiconductors (European Chips Act 2.0) are underway, with the aim of strengthening Europe’s semiconductor industry and reducing strategic dependencies.

The public consultation will run until Thursday, 12 November 2026, and is addressed to businesses, industry stakeholders, universities, research centres and investors, with the aim of developing a comprehensive and actionable plan for Greece’s participation in the European semiconductor value chain.

Following the completion of the consultation, the final draft will be submitted to the Government Committee for Industry.

The Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos, made the following statement:

“We want our country not merely to be a user of new technologies, but to play a meaningful role in their creation and development. We have outstanding scientists, strong research centres and businesses that innovate and achieve international recognition. Today, 35 companies operate in Greece in the semiconductor sector, employing approximately 1,200 highly skilled professionals.

We have taken the first substantial step by providing €3.63 million in funding for the Hellenic Semiconductor Competence Centre. Through the new National Semiconductor Strategy, we aim to harness this potential, further strengthen the links between research and industry, and enhance our country’s position on the European technology map.

Our goal is to create more jobs offering better pay, within a more productive and competitive economy.”
