02/04: HBio organized at N.C.S.R. Demokritos in Athens, the event "Actively participating patients in clinical studies are  the key to the expected development of innovative biopharmaceutical research in Greece". The main mission of the event was to highlight the active participation of patients in clinical studies, the promotion of biopharmaceutical research, and also healthy business practices that lead to innovation and better health for all. Leading Members of Patient Associations, Prominent State Representatives (Ministry of Health, National Organisation for Medecines, National Ethics Committee), Leading Executives of pharmaceutical companies & CROs participated in the event and benefited from the interaction between them.   

The event highlighted the pivotal role of patients as active and committed participants in clinical studies. 15 speakers were placed in three thematic panels, and discussed the good practices of patient activation, the cooperation opportunities of all interested parties with the aim of further developing biopharmaceutical research in Greece. Finally, the ambition of the organizers was the proposal of actions with immediate implementation for the progress of clinical studies in our country.

Dr Ioanna Koukli, president of HBio leaded the panel focused on Clinical Trial Good Practices for Patient Activation and Participation. All panelists Vasiliki Rafaela Vakouftsi, Alexandros Spyridonidis, Menia Koukougianni, Paraskevi Michalopoulou and Katerina Koutsogianni highlighted once again the importance of patient involvement as well as the need for fundamental changes.

During the panel on how the cooperation between all involved stakeholders in clinical trials can be strengthened, Tina Antachopoulou as moderator and panelists Leonidas Klironomos, Pr. Evangelos Terpos, Vera Vaseou and Vasiliki Mollaki presented the regulatory framework for clinical trial conduct both in Greece and EU and discussed how important trials are for both the patients as well as the national healthcare system. 

The need for collaborative strategies to foster a sustainable environment for clinical research innovation was highlighted during the last panel of the HBio event focused on patients and clinical trials by speakers Constantine Stratakis, Lia Koraki, Nikos Dedes, Dimitris Athanasiou, Pr. Stylianos Orfanos and moderator Katerina Papathoma. The launch of new interventions aiming to reduce bureaucracy and strengthen Greece’s competitiveness in the global clinical trials field, presented by the General Secretary of Health Services, Lilian Venetia Vildiridi, is a solid step towards the future!
